Mobile phone maker Sony Ericsson is launching the Xperia arc handset, the first of a new generation of smartphones planned for 2011.
Xperia arc, which is based on version 2.3 of Google Inc's (GOOG) Android platform, will be available globally in selected markets including Japan from the first quarter, the company said late Wednesday.
The device, which weighs 117 grams and measures 8.7 millimeters at its thinnest part, has a 4.2 inch touchscreen.
Sony Ericsson, a joint venture between Sweden's Telefon AB L.M. Ericsson (ERIC) and Japan's Sony Corp. (SNE), last year returned to profitability following several loss-making quarters amid healthy sales of its Xperia range of Android-based high-end smartphones.
